Fintech Unicorns in 2026: Who Leads and What 664 Means
Fintech unicorns are financial technology companies that have reached a $1 billion valuation. Dealroom tracked 664 of them in November 2026, worth about $2.9 trillion combined, though its list also includes publicly listed companies.
What are fintech unicorns?
A fintech unicorn is a financial technology company valued at $1 billion or more. Dealroom's wording is a company that reached a $1B+ valuation, verified by Dealroom (page updated November 2026).
Sifted's table of fast risers labels sectors such as lending, insurance, banking, payments and wealth. So fintech unicorns cover far more than payment apps, and a single headline number hides a lot of variety.
Dealroom also tracks 113 fintech "thoroughbreds", which it defines as startup-era companies earning $100M or more in annual revenue. That tier measures traction rather than a paper valuation. Dealroom lists these companies in a separate table from its unicorns.
Lists often keep calling a company a unicorn after it lists on a stock exchange. The label describes a milestone more than a current status.
How many fintech unicorns are there in 2026?
Dealroom counted 664 fintech unicorns in November 2026, with a combined valuation of about $2.9 trillion. It says 57 of them are valued at $10B or more, which is about 9 percent of the total by my arithmetic.
What does Dealroom's count of fintech unicorns include?
Dealroom's table gives each company a status: private, listed through an IPO, or listed through a SPAC (a shell company that lists first and buys a business afterwards). The page shows no totals by status or by country.
The table also holds entries with a blank or negative valuation. That conflicts with the $1B definition, so read 664 and $2.9T as Dealroom's headline figures, not an audited count.
In practice, totals on live databases move as valuations are refreshed. A number quoted in spring rarely matches one quoted in autumn.
Which fintech unicorns are the most valuable?
Dealroom ranks Stripe first at $159B, a value set in an employee tender offer as reported by Bloomberg, then Revolut at $115B and Robinhood at $84B.
The table below shows the first ten as listed in November 2026. The top three alone add up to $358B, roughly 12 percent of the $2.9T total (my arithmetic, using rounded figures).
Rank | Company | HQ country | Founded | Valuation | Status |
1 | Stripe | United States | 2009 | $159B | Private |
2 | Revolut | United Kingdom | 2015 | $115B | Private |
3 | Robinhood | United States | 2012 | $84B | IPO 2021 |
4 | Carvana | United States | 2012 | $70B | IPO 2017 |
5 | Nubank | Brazil | 2013 | $70B | IPO 2021, according to CNBC |
6 | Binance | Not listed | 2017 | $60B | Private |
7 | PayPal | United States | 1998 | $51B | IPO 2002 |
8 | Block | United States | 2009 | $46B | IPO 2015 |
9 | Ramp | United States | 2019 | $44B | Private |
10 | Coinbase | United States | 2012 | $41B | IPO 2021 |
Only four of the ten are private on Dealroom's own status column, and Binance has no headquarters country listed. PayPal, founded in 1998, sits beside Ramp, founded in 2019.
Readers often expect a list of fintech unicorns to be young private startups. This ranking of fintech unicorns reads more like the largest fintech-tagged companies by value.

Which fintech unicorns reached $1 billion fastest?
Sifted's table puts Brex and Figure Technologies first, each reaching $1bn in 21 months. The page is undated and its valuation years run from 2015 to 2019, so it shows who was fastest in that period, not today.
Rank | Company | Country | Sector | Founded | Months to $1bn |
1 | Brex | United States | Lending | 2017 | 21 |
2 | Figure Technologies | United States | Lending | 2018 | 21 |
3 | Zenefits | United States | Insurance | 2013 | 28 |
4 | Symphony | United States | Multi | 2014 | 32 |
5 | Linklogis | China | Lending | 2016 | 32 |
6 | Dave | United States | Banking | 2016 | 35 |
7 | Airwallex | Australia | Payments | 2015 | 40 |
8 | Cgtz | China | Wealth | 2013 | 41 |
9 | wefox Group | Germany | Insurance | 2015 | 41 |
10 | SoFi | United States | Lending | 2011 | 42 |
Sifted says all ten took under four years. It attributes a seven-year average to "one study" and gives 5.5 years for the UK, 7 for Germany and 6.5 for Sweden, represented by Klarna.
The data was compiled by the blog Traders of Crypto and adapted by Sifted. That second-hand chain is worth knowing before you quote it.
Fast-to-$1B lists tend to reflect when funding was easy as much as company quality. Read them as a snapshot of one funding period.
Where are most fintech unicorns based?
The United States dominates every ranking of fintech unicorns in these sources. Seven of Dealroom's first ten are headquartered there, and six of Sifted's ten fastest risers are American.
CB Insights said much the same in April 2020: 38 of its 67 fintech unicorns were in North America, with 12 each in Asia and Europe. Dealroom's page gives no country totals, so a 2026 comparison isn't possible from these pages.
Outside the United States, the first ten on Dealroom's list include the United Kingdom (Revolut) and Brazil (Nubank). Sifted's speed table adds China, Australia and Germany.
Readers often assume fintech unicorns are spread evenly across financial centers. The ranked lists suggest otherwise, though top-ten samples are small.
Why do counts of fintech unicorns differ between trackers?
CB Insights counted 67 fintech unicorns worth $253B combined on April 22, 2020. Dealroom counts 664 and $2.9T in November 2026. That gap isn't a growth rate, because the pages don't state matching methods and the CB Insights report is more than six years old.
The 2020 report said Q1 produced three new fintech unicorns (Pine Labs, HighRadius and Flywire), against eight in Q4 2019.
Methods are the likeliest reason counts of fintech unicorns diverge, though that is general understanding rather than something the pages state.
A tracker can count only private companies or keep listed ones. It can use the last funding round or a market price, and it can draw the fintech boundary in different places.
Treat that report as history from the Covid-19 downturn. It says nothing about 2026.
How should you read a list of fintech unicorns?
Check the date: Dealroom is November 2026, CB Insights is April 2020, and Sifted shows none.
Check the status column, since private, IPO and SPAC fintech unicorns behave differently.
Check what the valuation means. Dealroom's page doesn't say whether each row uses a funding round or a market price.
Look for blank or negative valuations before using a total.
Keep trackers apart. Don't add one tracker's count of fintech unicorns to another's.
Analysts commonly quote a total without its date. Adding the date makes the number checkable.
Your next step with fintech unicorns
Before you quote any number on fintech unicorns, note the tracker and its date. Start with Dealroom's November 2026 table, strip out blank valuations, then check the top names against company filings. This page isn't investment advice.
